As the market focus article starting on page 13 of the May/June issue says, the sun has set over the western states, much like it has all over the USA and indeed most of the world.  That’s what makes this recession so unique and difficult to come to terms with: it’s almost ubiquitous.

I spoke in the last issue about how battening down the hatches and waiting for the storm to pass could do far more damage to your business than looking beyond the economic gloom.  Plan now to gain later, I said.

The trouble with forensic market forecasts and visuals charting cyclical patterns and processes, is that folk can be lulled into a passive sense of security, thinking that everything ebbs and flows at its own pace and industries cannot be influenced or affected by the companies that work within them.

Chris Gilfilen, of US Crane, Inc., gives his take on crane inspection and maintenance.

The issues involving crane inspection and preventative maintenance are very numerous and very complex.  The qualifications of inspectors and the frequency of inspections seem to be the most difficult ones to tackle.
