US-based T&M Cranes has completed a modernisation project at an Aetna Steel facility, upgrading the site’s overhead material-handling systems after Aetna Steel recently acquired the building.

The project addressed legacy equipment issues, replacing outdated direct current (DC) powered cranes with new equipment and updated infrastructure.

According to T&M Cranes, the original overhead cranes at the Aetna Steel site were operating with an older DC power setup.

The company was engaged to deliver a comprehensive electrical upgrade, transitioning the facility’s cranes to contemporary alternating current (AC) power.

The project also included the installation of a new heavy-duty runway electrification system.

A key element of the upgrade involved delivering a new 20t overhead crane. This unit was fitted with two 10t double-reeved Detroit hoists.

The configuration is aimed at improving operator control and safety.

The company stated that the double-reeved dual-hoist system allows for “seamless, driftless picks—giving operators absolute control while maximising workplace safety and product integrity.”

T&M Cranes specialises in overhead material handling equipment and provides systems and services to clients across North America.

The family-owned firm prioritises customer support, with teams spanning engineering, sales, and parts, along with a 24/7 service department dedicated to meeting customers’ crane equipment needs.

The Aetna Steel facility upgrade was designed to resolve efficiency and safety issues caused by operating ageing DC-powered cranes.

By converting the system to AC and installing modern equipment, the project aimed to boost reliability and enable safer material handling on site.

Last month, T&M Cranes designed and manufactured custom steel rotators for Steelcon to address challenges in handling large structural steel sections.

The equipment was developed after Steelcon found that manual flipping and standard crane lines led to excessive wear and increased safety risks.
