Unique Group has partnered with Gates Material Handling to install and commission a new 10t overhead crane system at a sugar processing facility in Louisiana, US.

The work focused on ensuring the safe operation of the crane before it was released for regular use in the facility.

The installation involved assembling the bridge, completing the mechanical fittings, and performing electrical commissioning and operational adjustments.

In the final stage, the project team conducted proof load testing using Water Weights bags. This enabled technicians to apply the test load incrementally in a controlled environment and monitor the crane’s performance as the load increased.

During the proof load test, engineers recorded bridge deflection, observed hoist mechanisms, checked the braking systems, monitored trolley movement, and assessed the controls and overall operational performance.

Each step was carefully documented as part of the commissioning records for the lifting system.

According to the project team, the progressive application of load, rather than a sudden fixed weight, enabled continuous assessment of the crane’s operational behaviour.

The commissioning process highlighted collaboration between crane manufacturers, installation specialists, engineers, and proof load testing providers.

According to the companies involved, each contributed specialist skills to ensure the lifting system met safety and operational requirements before full production use.

Unique Group marketing manager Jim Jota said: “Thank you to the Gates Material Handling team for the opportunity to support another successful project. We appreciate the collaboration and look forward to working together again.”
