Laser-View Technologies has installed its Crane Sentry system to monitor the position of a jib crane operating in close proximity to both a gantry crane and an overhead crane.
The installation aims to reduce the risk of collisions by tracking the jib’s movement and preventing other cranes from entering the same operational zone.
For this specific application, the Crane Sentry system is mounted directly on the jib crane.
The device wraps around the mast, providing continuous 360-degree encoding of the jib’s rotational position.
The system divides the range of rotation into quadrants and is configured to restrict gantry and overhead cranes from encroaching into the active area of the jib within each designated zone.
The Crane Sentry product line uses laser distance sensors to detect collisions, manage operating zones, and facilitate accurate crane positioning.
The system can alert operators or automatically respond when there is a risk of overlap between the cranes.
The Crane Sentry system features a modular design that supports the use of up to two lasers, and is equipped with a colour touchscreen for both data entry and display purposes.
The system is housed in a polycarbonate enclosure with a rating of IP 65/66, indicating resistance to dust and water.
It is equipped with a non-contact Class 2 laser distance sensor and is suitable for use in both indoor and outdoor environments.
The device operates with a measurement precision of up to 1in/8in, or 3mm.
Crane Sentry provides programmable relay outputs that interface with existing crane controls.
These outputs can be used to trigger alerts or adjust operations automatically within the monitored zones.
In addition to monitoring jib cranes, the technology is used for identifying potential collisions between crane bridges and walls, controlling access to restricted areas, and managing crane positioning near walkways or machinery.
